Removing extra spaces cleans up text by collapsing runs of whitespace, trimming line edges, and fixing blank lines. It is essential when copying text from PDFs, emails, web pages, or word processors that introduce stray spaces and tabs.
All processing happens inside your browser — your text is never uploaded, stored, or tracked.
How to remove extra spaces

- Toggle the cleanup rules you want — or pick a preset for common tasks.
- The cleaned result appears live in the right-hand box.
- Review the Before & after panel to see exactly what was removed.
- Use Copy to copy the result, Download to save it, or Swap to send it back to the input.

Cleanup rules explained
Each option targets a specific kind of whitespace problem. You can enable any combination — the tool applies them in a safe order:
| Option | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Collapse multiple spaces | Turns runs of spaces into a single space | "a b" → "a b" |
| Trim each line | Removes leading & trailing whitespace on every line | " hello " → "hello" |
| Collapse blank lines | Reduces 2+ blank lines to one | "a\n\n\n\nb" → "a\n\nb" |
| Trim whole document | Removes whitespace at the very start and end | "\n\nhello\n\n" → "hello" |
| Remove tabs | Replaces tab characters with a single space | "a\tb" → "a b" |
| Remove non-breaking spaces | Converts and Unicode separators to a normal space | "a b" → "a b" |
| Remove all spaces | Strips every space from the text entirely | "a b c" → "abc" |
| Remove line breaks | Joins all lines into one paragraph | "a\nb" → "a b" |
When to remove extra spaces
Extra spaces creep in from many sources. Common cases include:
- Copying from PDFs. PDF extraction often inserts a space between every word or character.
- Pasting from emails. Quoted replies accumulate blank lines and indentation.
- Word processor exports. Soft returns and manual line breaks create odd spacing.
- HTML scraping. Markup whitespace becomes visible when tags are stripped.
- Data entry. Trailing spaces from spreadsheet cells break comparisons and sorting.
Cleaning whitespace improves readability, makes text easier to compare, and prevents subtle bugs in code and data pipelines.
Tips for cleaner text
- Use the safe clean preset first. It removes obvious problems without touching intentional formatting.
- Check the before/after panel. It shows exactly what was removed, so you can verify nothing important was lost.
- Only remove line breaks when you need a single paragraph. Otherwise, keep them for readability.
- Remove non-breaking spaces before other processing. They often hide in text copied from web pages and break word counts.
- Download the result if you need to preserve the cleaned text outside the browser.
Frequently asked questions
Is this tool free?
Yes. The tool is completely free, requires no account, and has no advertisements.
Is my text stored or uploaded?
No. All cleanup happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page loads, every feature works without an internet connection.
What is a non-breaking space?
A non-breaking space ( , U+00A0) looks like a normal space but prevents line breaks. It often appears when copying text from web pages. This tool can convert it to a regular space.
Will this affect my word count?
It can. Collapsing spaces and removing blank lines don't change word counts, but removing all spaces merges words together. Removing line breaks also merges lines. The stats panel shows the before and after word counts.
Can I keep intentional indentation?
Yes. Leave Trim each line off to preserve leading spaces. Only enable it when you want uniform left alignment.
What does "Characters saved" mean?
It is the difference between the input character count and the output character count — the total number of characters removed by your selected cleanup rules.
Can I undo the changes?
Yes. Click Swap to send the cleaned result back to the input, or simply paste the original text again. The tool does not overwrite your input.
