A character counter measures the length of a piece of text by counting every character — letters, digits, spaces, punctuation, and symbols. It is essential for social media posts, meta descriptions, SMS messages, and any field with a strict character limit.
All processing happens inside your browser — your text is never uploaded, stored, or tracked.
How to use this character counter
- Type or paste your text into the input box on the left.
- Watch the live character statistics update on the right as you type.
- Use the text tools to remove spaces, line breaks, punctuation, or numbers.
- Check the character-limit cards to see if your text fits a platform or SEO field.
- Click Copy Stats to copy the statistics, or Save Report to download a full report.

How characters are counted
A character is any single unit of text — a letter, a digit, a space, a punctuation mark, or a symbol. This tool counts characters in two ways: with spaces (every character including whitespace) and without spaces (whitespace removed).
Letters are A–Z and a–z, plus Devanagari and other Unicode letters. Digits are 0–9. Punctuation includes commas, periods, question marks, exclamation points, quotes, parentheses, and symbols like @, #, $, and %.
Unicode code points count each character as a single unit even when it is stored as multiple code units — for example, an emoji counts as one code point but two JavaScript characters. This gives a more accurate count for international text.
| Metric | What it counts | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Characters | Every character including spaces | Twitter, SMS, meta tags |
| No spaces | Letters, digits, punctuation only | Dense copy, coding |
| Letters | Alphabetic characters (any script) | Readability checks |
| Digits | 0–9 | Numeric fields |
| Punctuation | Symbols and punctuation marks | Style review |
| Unicode code points | Each character as one unit | Emojis, international text |
Why character limits matter
Social platforms and search engines enforce character limits to keep content scannable. Twitter/X allows 280 characters per post, SMS allows 160 characters per message, and SEO titles are typically limited to 60 characters so they display fully in search results.
Using a character counter helps you stay within these limits without cutting off important information. The limit cards above show exactly how much room you have left and turn orange near the limit and red when you exceed it.
Tips for staying within character limits
- Remove filler words. Words like "very", "really", and "just" add length without meaning.
- Use abbreviations. Replace "and" with "&", "with" with "w/", and "information" with "info".
- Remove extra spaces. Use the Clean spaces tool to collapse multiple spaces into one.
- Drop punctuation where possible. Commas and periods add characters — remove them when the meaning stays clear.
- Use the No spaces count to see the raw text length when spaces are removed.
Frequently asked questions
Is this character counter free?
Yes. The tool is completely free, requires no account, and has no advertisements.
Is my text stored or uploaded?
No. All counting and analysis happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page loads, every feature works without an internet connection.
What does the Copy Stats button do?
It copies a formatted statistics report — character counts, letter counts, word count, and platform limit status — to your clipboard. To copy the raw text itself, select it in the textarea and press Ctrl+C (or Cmd+C).
What does the Save Report button do?
It downloads a complete .txt report containing all statistics, platform limit status, and the original text for reference.
What is the difference between characters and Unicode code points?
JavaScript counts some characters, like emojis, as two units. Unicode code points count each visible character as one, giving a more accurate length for international text.
Can I count characters in Nepali or Hindi?
Yes. The counter treats Devanagari and other Unicode letters as characters, so mixed-script text is supported.
Can I remove spaces or line breaks?
Yes. Use the Remove all spaces or Remove line breaks buttons in the text tools panel.
