A vowel and consonant counter counts how many vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and consonants (all other letters) appear in a piece of text. It is useful for language learning, phonetic analysis, word games, and readability checks.

How vowels and consonants are counted
A vowel is a speech sound made with an open vocal tract. In written English, the vowel letters are A, E, I, O, U. A consonant is any other letter — B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Z.
The letter Y is ambiguous. It acts as a consonant in words like "yes" and "yellow", but as a vowel in "my", "gym", and "happy". This tool treats Y as a consonant by default; enable Count Y as a vowel to include it in the vowel count.
Accented vowels like á, é, í, ó, ú, ü, and ñ are handled per your choice. By default they count as vowels; disable the option to treat them as consonants or exclude them.
| Letter | Default classification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A, E, I, O, U | Vowel | Always counted as vowels |
| Y | Consonant | Enable "Count Y as a vowel" to change |
| B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Z | Consonant | Standard consonants |
| Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú, Ü | Vowel | Toggle "Include accented vowels" |
| Digits, spaces, punctuation | Neither | Counted separately as non-letters |
Devanagari and other scripts
Devanagari — used for Nepali, Hindi, Marathi, and Sanskrit — has independent vowel letters and vowel signs (matras) that attach to consonants. This tool recognises the independent vowels अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ऋ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ as vowels, and the remaining Devanagari letters as consonants.
Matras (vowel signs like ा, ि, ी, ु, ू, े, ै, ो, ौ) are treated as part of the consonant they attach to, so a syllable like "का" counts as one consonant plus its inherent vowel. For a detailed syllable-level analysis, use a dedicated Devanagari tool.
You can disable Devanagari counting if you only want to analyse Latin text.
What vowel and consonant counts are used for
- Language learning. Practise distinguishing vowel and consonant sounds in English or a new language.
- Word games. Scrabble, Boggle, and crossword puzzles often hinge on vowel-to-consonant balance.
- Readability analysis. A high consonant-to-vowel ratio can make text harder to pronounce and read.
- Phonetic study. Compare the sound distribution of different languages or dialects.
- Poetry and songwriting. Vowel sounds carry rhythm and assonance — counting them helps shape lines.
- Cryptography and puzzles. Vowel patterns are used in ciphers and word ladders.
Frequently asked questions
Is this vowel and consonant counter free?
Yes. The tool is completely free, requires no account, and has no advertisements.
Is my text stored or uploaded?
No. All counting and analysis happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page loads, every feature works without an internet connection.
Why is Y counted as a consonant by default?
Most grammar references treat Y as a consonant except when it forms a vowel sound, as in "my" or "gym". Because it depends on context, this tool defaults to consonant and lets you toggle it.
Are accented vowels counted?
Yes by default — á, é, í, ó, ú, ü all count as vowels. You can disable this in the options if you want strict A–E–I–O–U only.
Does it count vowels in Nepali or Hindi?
Yes. Enable Include Devanagari vowels to count independent Devanagari vowel letters. Matras are treated as part of the consonant they attach to.
What is the vowel ratio?
It is the percentage of letters that are vowels: vowels ÷ (vowels + consonants) × 100. English text typically has a vowel ratio of about 38–40%.
Can I download a report?
Yes. Click Save Report to download a complete .txt file containing all statistics and your original text.
